Trenchless pipe lining in Leander, TX

Leander Trenchless Pipe Lining: Is Relining Possible for Your Sewer Line?

Lining a sewer pipe from the inside can spare the lawn, the driveway and the landscaping, but only when the old pipe is in a state to take a liner. This page explains what lining is, how to tell whether your line qualifies, what the job involves and what to confirm before choosing it over replacement. Trenchless pipe lining & relining Leander TX plumbers offer only works on a line that is still continuous.

What is trenchless pipe lining, and is it a real alternative to digging?

Trenchless lining repairs a damaged pipe from the inside. A flexible liner soaked in resin is pulled into the old pipe and cured in place, forming a new, jointless pipe inside the old one. It is often called cured-in-place pipe lining, or CIPP.

The appeal is plain: less digging, less lawn and driveway to replace, and a repair that can take a day instead of several. The limit is just as plain. It only works when the old pipe is in a condition to accept a liner.

Does your line qualify for lining?

Only a camera answers this. A plumber looks at the pipe and checks a short list of conditions before recommending a liner.

  • The pipe is still continuousCracks, small holes and root intrusion can be lined. A collapsed or crushed section cannot.
  • Offsets are smallA joint pushed out of line by a large offset can block the liner from passing.
  • There is no major bellyA sag that holds standing water stays after lining and will still collect waste.
  • The line can be cleaned firstRoots and buildup have to be removed before a liner goes in. See high-pressure jetting for how that is done.
  • There is accessA cleanout or a small excavation point at each end.

Ask for the camera footage, and ask the plumber to explain in your own pipe's terms why it qualifies or does not.

What happens on a lining job?

A lining job has a few steps, and you can ask to see each one confirmed.

  1. Clean and inspect. The line is cleared of buildup and roots, and the camera confirms it is ready.
  2. Measure and prepare the liner. The liner is cut to length and saturated with resin.
  3. Insert and cure. The liner is pulled or inverted into the pipe and expanded against the wall. Heat, light or ambient curing hardens it.
  4. Reopen the connections. A cutter restores branch openings, such as a tub or toilet line that joins the main.
  5. Camera again. The finished pipe is inspected and the footage kept.

The liner forms a new smooth wall inside the old pipe, which is what a good camera check afterward should confirm.

Ask for the post-lining footage and for the warranty terms in writing, including what is covered and for how long.

Can lining help with a leak under the slab?

Lining is mainly a drain and sewer method, so it applies to waste lines, including those that run under a slab. A leaking supply line is a different case. A water supply line under the slab is often handled by a reroute through the walls or attic instead.

Our page on repairing a slab leak covers that decision. If the pipe under your floor is a drain, the camera shows whether it can be lined without cutting the slab.

What should you confirm before you choose lining over replacement?

Because lining hides the old pipe, the paperwork matters more than usual. A few checks protect you.

  • The camera reportIt should name the defects, their distance from the cleanout and the pipe material.
  • A direct comparisonAsk for the quote for both lining and replacement, so you see what each solves.
  • The liner material and its rated lifeAsk what the manufacturer rates and what the warranty says.
  • Who inspects itAsk whether the City of Leander requires an inspection and who arranges it.

The City of Leander says replacing fixtures without altering plumbing needs no permit. Work on a sewer line alters plumbing, and the city's permit page does not describe lining separately, so ask the plumber whether a permit applies. City Development Services is at 512-528-2733. Texas requires plumbing work to be done by a licensed plumber or under one's supervision, and you can check a license on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners site.

What are the downsides of lining that a sales pitch skips?

Lining is a good fit for many damaged lines, but it has limits that deserve a straight answer before you commit.

  • It does not fix the shape of the pipeA belly stays a belly, and a pipe that has been pushed out of line stays out of line.
  • It slightly reduces the pipe's diameterThe liner has thickness. On a small line, ask whether the capacity is still adequate.
  • Connections need to be reopened correctlyA missed branch is a blocked drain. Ask for the camera to confirm each opening after the cure.
  • Quality depends on preparationA liner over a dirty pipe fails early, so cleaning is not optional.

A good plumber will tell you when lining is the wrong choice and replacement is better. If you only hear one option, ask for the other quote.

Is pipe bursting another trenchless option?

Pipe bursting is a trenchless way to replace a pipe rather than line it. A tool pulled through the old pipe breaks it apart and pulls a new pipe in behind it, through the same path.

It can fix a line that lining cannot, such as one with a belly or a collapsed section, with less digging than a full trench. It still needs access pits at each end and care around other buried lines. Ask the plumber whether it fits your site, and call 811 before any pit is dug.

Who owns the sewer line? Ask Public Works first

Call Public Works at 512-259-2640 and ask your plumber which side of the property line the damage is on. If an access pit is needed, Texas811 asks for notice at least two business days before digging.

This page describes household sewer lines. Commercial and industrial lines are outside what we describe. For the broader repair picture, see the full sewer repair picture, and for ranges see the plumbing cost ranges for Leander.
